Geolocation API which shows where the desktop is....

I am thrilled to announce that today we have enhanced the Gears Geolocation API so that developers can now securely locate users to within 200m accuracy in major desktop browsers in hundreds of cities around the world. Whether your users are Chrome, Internet Explorer, Safari, Firefox or (soon) Opera users, you can now automatically deliver an experience that is tailored to their current location. For example, lastminute.com's new Radar application allows users to find nearby hotels, ITN's Google Earth mash up in Firefox allows users to see nearby news stories and Rummble's social discovery site allows users to automatically set their current location for friends to see.

When we originally proposed the Gears Geolocation API our goal was to make it easy for developers to deliver location enabled web sites on mobile phones. However we realized laptop users would benefit from location enabled web sites too. Today we are adding WiFi signals to the Geolocation API so that laptop users can benefit from location enabled web sites for the first time and mobile users from the increased accuracy. And because the Geolocation API is the same for developers in both desktop and mobile browsers you can even use the same code on both platforms!

In Chrome and Android, with Gears built in, you can deliver a location enabled web site without requiring your users to install a plug-in, but in other browsers they will need to go through a simple plug-in install process. We also submitted a simplified version of the Geolocation API as a WC3 specification and the upcoming Firefox 3.1 plans to support the W3C version directly. The Gears Geolocation API is completely free to developers and users through the default Google location provider.

To protect user privacy, the Gears Geolocation API server does not record user location. However, third party sites may do so, and we recommend that users only allow web sites they trust to access their location. Gears will always tell a user when your site wants to access their location for the first time and the user can either allow or deny your site permission. We recommend users check the privacy policy of your web site if they are in doubt as to how your site may use location information.

Vehicle to vehicle GPS for safe riding

honda-motorcycle-to-car-communication-system_UDm6o_54
Better awareness guarantees better safety, we know this. Given the number of road accidents we hear of today, society needs technology to shed refuge. Nothing requires a long wait nowadays; Honda has it before we realize – a Vehicle-to-Vehicle GPS system, which assures awareness and safety to motorcyclists – the most vulnerable on roads. Revealed at the CAR 2 CAR Communication Consortium event in Germany, the system developed aggregates data on the motorcyclists’ navigation device, informing them in advance on the direction, speed and distance of the other vehicles nearby.

What’s innovative:

Human perception is perhaps the biggest reason for road accidents. Honda’s GPS system aspire to make obvious the potential risks ahead, warning the exposed riders providing them with audible instructions of the peril through a Bluetooth to the in-built speakers in the helmet, possibly cutting on human errors.

Watch this:

Most road accidents are owing to the other driver’s slipups, we know. Therefore, no matter how safe you try keeping on the road, a bad day will have you in glitch. But if you were evident of the risk up-forth, the possibilities could minimize. The only reason we believe Honda’s safety system may well answer the questions of road safety, reducing on the number of reasons that fright all road users.

How to hide user account in XP

You can hide a user account from the Welcome screen in Windows XP, but it requires editing the Windows registry. Unfortunately, there is no easy way to do it unless you use a third party application. I’ll explain both ways in this article.

Note that when you hide a user account in Windows XP, it’s better if you are running Windows XP Professional rather than XP Home edition. Why? Well, once you hide an account, it will no longer show up on the main login screen, so how do you access it?

welcome screen xp

Well in XP Pro, you can press CTRL + ALT + DEL twice to get the old Windows 2000 login box and type in the user name and password to access the hidden user account. But if you have XP Home, this trick does not work and the only way to access your hidden account is to start the computer in Safe Mode, which is major pain if you want to use that account often.

So before doing this, make sure you are running XP Pro otherwise you will not have normal access to your account.

Hide User Account in XP

Step 1: Open the Windows Registry editor by clicking on Start, then Run, and typing in regedit.

Step 2: Navigate the the following registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\ SpecialAccounts\UserList

hide user account xp

Step 3: Now right-click on UserList and create a new DWORD value and name it exactly what the user name you want to hide is. For value, give it a value of 0. 0 Means hide the user account and 1 means show the user account.

As you can see from below, I added “Aseem Kishore” to the UserList as a new DWORD key with a value of 0. Make sure that the name you enter matches exactly with the user name displayed on the Welcome screen. So if you want to hide the Administrator account, type in “Administrator”, etc.

hide user name xp

Step 4: Close the registry editor and reboot your computer. Now press CTRL + ALT + DEL twice and you should be able to type in the user name and password to access the hidden account!

You can also download a free program from IntelliAdmin that will do the same thing for you, but make it much easier. Scroll all the way down to the bottom and you’ll see a link for the program.

xp user hide

It’s called XP User Hide and you can simply check off which user accounts you want to hide and it will modify the registry for you. You can learn more about User Acounts in Windows here. Enjoy!

Chandaryaan 1, India’s unmanned moon probe launched to seek the unknown

On OCT22nd, when most of India dozed off in the comfort of their cots, ISRO scientists at the PSLV slowly took us into the history books. A 44-meter, 316-ton PSLV-11 rocket carrying 1,380-kg Chandaryaan 1, the unmanned Indian lunar orbiter, was set in quest to unravel the hidden mysteries of the moon, from the Satish Dhawan Space Center at Sriharikota at 6:22am IST. In the next 12 days, amid all events, the orbiter will arrive at the desired lunar orbit – putting India in the lunar questers group, and setting on the operational period. Hauling 11 payloads, the Chandaryaan 1 will aspire to explore the moon over the next 2 years.

What’s innovative:

The robotic probe to the moon is India’s grand step forward in its objective to keep pace with the space investigating nations around the world. Chandaryaan 1 is powered by a single solar panel generating a maximum of 700 W. A 36 Ampere-Hour (Ah) Lithium-ion battery powers the spacecraft when the solar panel is not illuminated by the sun.

The main objectives of the Chandaryaan 1 - carrying 11 payloads, of which five were built in India itself, while the other six foreign-built – are: to explore the moon thoroughly, poles included for water, ice on the celestial body, plus search for Helium 3, an isotope in rarity on Earth, but vital for the energy needs of the future. Besides these, the spacecraft with all the high resolution equipment embedded will make all efforts to create a complete map of the moon’s chemical characteristics and its three dimensional topography.

In order to acquaint us, Chandaryaan 1 in due course of the journey, will send all detailed information available, back to Earth through its built-in transmitters, modified into radio waves to the ground antennas. DSN Antennas have been installed at various locations to keep note of the craft’s health and other aspects, while the spacecraft control center will keep it updated with the required chores.

Jump down further to see video of the successful launch of Chandaryaan 1.

Watch This:

Because India has never gone beyond Earth’s orbit, this mission to space holds precedence, not just for ISRO but for the entire nation. Spending approximately 380-crores for a space mission in a country where millions dwell in extreme poverty seems critical. But when nations follow the policy of limited reveal information – a country like India, that’s knocking on the doors of development, needs to be self equipped and well posted on all technological expertise when it comes to outer space.

How To Download Music From Esnips

Esnips is a popular file sharing and storing service that offers its members 5 Gigabytes of online storage space that can be used to host videos, pictures and audio files. The audio hosting comes with a music player that recently got updated having the result that Esnips music downloaders were not working anymore.

Esnips have added a referrer check to the music player which means that users can only download songs if they initiate the download with the correct referrer. The process of downloading files from Esnips is therefor extended by one step.

Most steps stay the same on the other hand. The user visits the Esnips website and opens a page that contains a music file that is played in the Esnips player or perform a search and copy the links pointing to the music files to the clipboard. The url of that page is copied into an Esnips download link generator which converts the encrypted download link to the unencrypted one. The step that has changed is the last one. Instead of downloading the music from Esnips directly or pasting it into a download manager the user has to paste the unencrypted url back into the web browser to be able to download it. That is an inconvenience but still better than not being able to download the music from Esnips at all.

Step 1: Visit Esnips

esnips

Step 2: Copy Link URL

Right-click a link and copy it to the clipboard or copy the link from the address bar

esnips download links

Step 3: Paste the link and convert it

Now visit a script that can convert Esnips links so that they point to the correct url that can be used to download the mp3 files from Esnips. One script that can do it is Zuhaib’s Esnips Link Generator.

Step 4: Download

Copy the Download Link and Paste it back into a browser tab. The download for the correct mp3 file should pop up immediately.

Microsoft Touchless

Microsoft Office Labs are always good for a surprise. For anyone who does not know what Microsoft Office Labs is about: It basically is used to publish software programs created by Microsoft employees in their spare time that relate to Microsoft products.

Microsoft Touchless (via Shell City) is an interesting application that fits well into the touchscreen craze that Microsoft started with the Windows 7 announcement. Everyone knows that Windows 7 will provide better support for touchscreens. Users without a touchscreen could make use of Touchless which utilizes a webcam to provide a touchscreen-like experience.

A Touchless demo can be downloaded from the Office Labs project page which contains four demonstrations. Snake is the well known snake game while Defender offers a up to four player pong experience. Map is a basic map application which supports rotating, zooming and moving while Draw lets the user draw on the screen.

Touchless requires a computer running Windows XP or Windows Vista and a webcam that is DirectX9 compliant. The application can be started by extracting the contents of the archive to the computer system and double-clicking on TouchlessDemo.exe.

Microsoft Touchless provides access to the Touchless SDK which can be used to create third party applications that make use of the system. The whole package is Open-Source and could provide a way to add basic touchscreen support to webcam owners in Windows 7 which would surely explode the number of users that would make use of the Touchscreen features.

Next version of Windows

Microsoft is planning to ship its next major version of Windows--known internally as version "7".
The company discussed Windows 7 on Thursday at a conference for its field sales force in Orlando, Fla., according to sources close to the company.
While the company provided few details, Windows 7, the next client version of the operating system, will be among the steps taken by Microsoft to establish a more predictable release schedule, according to sources. The company plans a more "iterative" process of information disclosure to business customers and partners, sources said.
Windows Vista, the oft-delayed most recent release of Windows, shipped to businesses in November and to consumers in January after more than five years of development. Vista's gestation period was marked by shifting product details as internal priorities changed and problems arose with development.
Like Vista, Windows 7 will ship in consumer and business versions, and in 32-bit and 64-bit versions. The company also confirmed that it is considering a subscription model to complement Windows, but did not provide specifics or a time frame.
The discussion of Windows' future isn't surprising, given that Microsoft has been criticized by business customers for delays related to Vista. Many business customers pay for Microsoft's software under a license agreement called Software Assurance.
Windows 7 was previously known by the code name Vienna. A Microsoft representative confirmed that Windows 7 is the internal code name for the next client release of Windows. The details were released "as part of our ongoing outreach to enterprise customers and partners, Microsoft has begun sharing plans for how they will continue to deliver value to businesses in the future?Software Assurance customers in particular," a representative said in a statement via e-mail.
"Microsoft is scoping Windows 7 development to a three-year time frame, and then the specific release date will ultimately be determined by meeting the quality bar," according to the representative.
